Surgical Counselor
Job Summary:
The Surgery Counselor is responsible for scheduling patients for surgery, ensuring insurance benefits are accurately verified, and providing patients with clear and detailed information about the surgical process and expectations. This role requires strong organizational and communication skills to support a smooth and efficient experience for both patients and the clinic’s daily operations.
About the Practice:
The physicians of Heaton Eye Associates have been serving East Texas’ vision needs for over 40 years. We offer state-of-the-art technology with special services ranging from primary eye care to world-class laser surgery. Our physicians were the first to offer LASIK laser vision correction in East Texas and have performed tens of thousands of procedures since its inception. Heaton Eye offers a wide range of premium lenses including Symfony Extended Depth of Focus lenses, PanOptix® lenses, and Vivity® lenses to offer freedom from glasses and contacts after cataract surgery. Our surgeons were the first in East Texas to offer the RxSight Light Adjustable Lens, the only lens implant that allows patients to preview and adjust their vision after cataract surgery. We are the first and only practice in the area offering EVO ICL, another exciting option offering patients freedom from contacts and glasses. Additionally, we have the only fellowship-trained Pediatric Specialist as well as the only Oculoplastic Surgeon offering cosmetic, medical, and reconstructive surgery as well as state-of-the-art aesthetic services in the area. Certification/Licensures:
None required
Experience:
Minimum of 1 year of medical office experience and general knowledge of insurance
Education:
High School diploma or equivalent
Primary Job Duties and Accountabilities:
- Schedule surgery - Talk to patients and/or family members regarding available dates and times for surgery
- Verify patient information
- Counsel on pre-op/post-op instructions, eye drops, processes and timelines, insurance and financial responsibilities
- Initiate medical clearance paperwork after auditing medical history
- Accurately enter information into schedule template, schedule pre-op appointments
- Coordinate with ASC/Facility performing surgery
- Obtain pre-certifications to maximize reimbursement, collect patient's estimated balance
- Finalize schedule, proofing for accuracy of data, auditing charts to ensure proper documentation to warrant surgery
- Notify responsible parties with arrival times and reiterate pre-op instructions
- Ensure surgeon has all supplies and information
- Schedule post-op appointments
- Prepare post-op surgical bags
- Guest and Employee Relations/Customer Service
- Attendance/Punctuality and Reliability
- All other duties as assigned
Qualifications and Skills:
- Basic keyboarding and knowledge of practice management
- Must be able to type 20 wpm
- Must obtain Nextgen or other similar medical office software
- General office equipment
